Features
Exterior
On the outside, the 2017 Ford F-150 is clearly bigger and tougher than ever. The new body panels are made from aluminum which has allowed this model to drop about 150lbs without sacrificing strength. The bodywork is simple and unassailable, and the grille is noticeably taller and more intimidating- like a shining cattle gate. At a glance, it really makes a strong impression.
Interior
Inside the cab, you find a plethora of features packed into a surprisingly small amount of space along the dashboard. There’s so much to do inside the cab that Ford had to squeeze an unprecedented amount of control features into the steering wheel. Nevertheless, there’s still plenty of leg room and storage space inside the cab as well as high-quality materials which are geared toward durability.
Technology
Overall, the 2017 Ford F-150 is very similar to the 2016 model, in terms of the new EcoBoost powertrain which has been making headline news for the series. The EcoBoost V-6 is replacing the first-gen 3.5-liter V-6 version, which was optional in the F-150 lineup from 2011 on. With 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, the F-150 EcoBoost is the lower tune state for the engine.
The world is still waiting for the final output figures on the Raptor, but it’s sure to have much more than 400 hp. Everything being relative, even the regular-grade 3.5 is powerful, beating its predecessor by 10 hp and 50 pound-feet of torque. Ford calls their EcoBoost new, even though it carries over the old engine’s bore center proportions, cylinder liners, and piston displacement. The block and turbos are new, as is the new flow paths for the cooling system with its higher-volume water pump. The fuel-delivery system now uses port and direct injectors for lower emissions and improved power.
The engine is paired with a 10-speed automatic trans. The unit packs its many clutches and planetary gear sets into a unit no larger than the six-speed that it has replaced. Its gear ratios and insides are the same as the General Motors version. The bell housing is unique to Ford even though the internal components are identical to some other brands.
Performance
The 10-speed ratio spread of 7.4, is wider than the that of the six-speed, but not by a large margin. First gear is shorter than it is in the six-speed, and 10th gear is a bit taller than the automatic’s sixth gear. The arrangement comes with a promise of quicker acceleration and lower engine revs on the highway. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost is the reigning engine in the whole F-150 lineup, with much better peak torque than the 5.0-liter V-8. Like the V-8, the standard and mid-level engines have both gone unchanged for this model year and have retained their six-speed automatic pairing.
Safety
These award winning trucks have earned a five-star Overall safety rating from the NHTSA and come with a host of safety features. These include front and back airbags, and AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control.
